Short Bio
Mirela began competing in the Sport of skeleton in 2013 and went on to represent Canada in 3 World Championships and 2 Winter Olympics (2018, 2022). Mirela is a multiple World Cup Medalist and 2 x Crystal Globe Overall Bronze Winner.Written Statement
Through my participation on the Athlete's Commission, I hope to expand the impact athletes can have to bring about positive change to the sport system at all levels in Canada. The Athlete's Commission provides an opportunity for passionate athletes like myself to use their voice, work collaboratively with stakeholders to find solutions, and be a champion for change at a turning point in Canadian Sport history.
I have experienced such a supportive and positive environment under the COC as a two-time Olympian. However, these same qualities and values seem to not be reflected consistently at the club, regional and national-level programs. I have first handedly witnessed failures of these systems to provide safe, supportive, athlete-centric environments, and felt the frustration of ineffective governance and oversight. I believe we can rebuild a world class sport system where Canadian athletes will flourish in all parts of their sport journey, when we put athletes first.
I want to be a voice for Canadian athletes at this integral time in Canadian sport! I will bring my fiery passion, years of sporting experience, pursuit of excellence, and my hard work and determination to further the mission and values of the COC Athlete's Commission.
