Written Statement

I would love to continue my involvement as an athlete representative. With four years of experience, I better understand the importance of ensuring our athletes’ voices are heard in the decision-making processes within the COC. Through my recent mandate, I have learned a lot about the Canadian and International sport system, and the role that athletes play within these spaces. I co-led the Athletes Commission’s communications, where we developed conference calls to keep athletes informed on pressing issues. These calls were well received and will certainly be continued moving forward.

In these last few years, the Athletes’ Commission has worked to align its strategic plan with the COC. This has allowed us to have a greater presence, higher efficiency and a professional approach to discussions and decision making processes in the Canadian sports system, and at the COC level in particular. There are major challenges that we must prioritize moving forward. Some examples which come to mind are a greater implication of our athlete representatives in different sporting federations, diversity and inclusion, implementation of independent Safe Sport protocols, the environment and sustainable development, governance and Canada’s candidacy for future Olympic Games.

If re-elected, I hope to facilitate the integration of new members, better understand the issues that active athletes face, and to rework our strategic plan to align with new realities post-Tokyo and post-Beijing.

I hope to have the pleasure to interact with and speak to many of you!

Philippe Marquis, Two-time Olympian (2014 & 2018)
